Wives of Chinese miners trapped in a flooded coal mine gathered at their husband's dormitories on Tuesday (March 30) waiting for news of their husbands.
Rescue efforts continued, to save the 153 miners trapped in the unfinished Wangjialing Coal Mine or to recover their bodies.
Hopes were fading as some officials said there may be too much water to pump out.
But Xiao Shihong, a mother of four from Shanxi province, whose husband and two brothers-in-law were trapped in the mine, was not giving up hope.
"As long as there is hope we should go all out to rescue them. I have been here for two or three days and I haven't seen them taking any action, only a little water was pumped out today. Now it is the third day we still don't know anything," Xiao said.
Compared with other manual jobs, Chinese coal miners the level of danger is high. Everyday they must descend into rickety and poorly ventilated shafts.
If their husbands die, these wives face a bleak future with no income to sustain their families, said mother of two Wang Wen, also from Shanxi.
"There will be big problems, don't even ask about it, there will be big problems. We do not even know where to go to beg for food. I have two parents, they are over 80-years-old," she said.
Most of the workers believed to have been underground at the time of the accident were migrants, some from as far away as southern Hunan and Guizhou provinces, with no better employment options.
